Canon has discovered that TIFF (RAW) files from Canon 1D and Canon 1Ds loose their metadata when they are rotated or the data of the exif is modified using windows vista photographic tools, the press release also says that any modification should be done with the Canon Zoom Browser EX that comes as a bundle with the cameras, this said metadata that is lost can't be recovered.

The 1D and 1Ds RAW files are modified TIFF files (that allows the inclusion of metadata), and windows vista software applies the normal TIFF specs to those files deleting the metadata of those files.

Canon and Microsoft are trying to get a patch to solve the problem in the mean time, stick to the zoom browser EX.

Since for some unknown reason the link can be used in this news (it gets chopped) I will copy paste the relevant of the press release

From Canon Europe:

"We have discovered that the original image data of TIFF (RAW) images shot with an EOS-1D or EOS-1Ds Digital SLR Camera, and rotated or edited using Windows Explorer or Windows Gallery on a computer running Windows Vista, will disappear from the computer's memory. The image data that disappears cannot be recovered."

"When you rotate TIFF images, or edit the properties of TIFF images, shot with an EOS-1D/EOS -1Ds Camera, please use Canon's ZoomBrowser EX image browsing/editing software instead of Windows Explorer or Windows Photo Gallery when using a PC computer running Windows Vista."
